Bison Patty Melt
Everyone loves a good ole patty melt, typically made with ground beef and Swiss cheese, I had bison and Fontina in my fridge so that’s what I used for this patty melt and it was delicious!
Makes 2 Patty Melts
• 1 medium onion, sliced
• 1 Tbs of olive oil
• 1 Tbs of butter
• 1 lb of bison or ground beef
• 1/4 tsp each of salt, pepper and garlic powder to season the bison
• 3 oz of Fontina or Swiss cheese (or as much as you like)
• 4 slices of Rye bread
• butter for spreading on the bread
Start by heating the oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat, add the onions and cook for about 20 minutes or til lightly browned and caramelized.Shape the bison into 2 patties and season with salt, pepper and garlic powder. Heat a grill pan over high heat and cook the burgers about 3-4 minutes on each side until nicely browned, smash down a little with a spatula so they’re not so fat, remove from the pan. In the same pan, wipe out the excess oil, spread a little butter on the rye bread, place in the pan. Then place the patties on top of the bread, then the onions, then top with the cheese. Put the two bread slices on top and grill just until the cheese melts and the bread is lightly browned and toasty!
