Blackened Tilapia

A delicious Cajun Classic! Tilapia fillets are coated with a perfect spice rub, grilled, blackened and served with a creole mustard butter! Quick and easy for a weeknight dinner but also perfect for a dinner party!

Serves 2

Mustard Butter

  • 1 Tbs of Creole or spicy mustard
  • 1 Tbs of softened butter

Spice Rub

  • 1 1/2 Tbs of smoked paprika
  • 1 Tbs of garlic powder
  • 1 Tbs of onion powder
  • 1 Tbs of dried thyme
  • 1 tsp of black pepper
  • 1 tsp of cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp of dried basil
  • 1 tsp of dried oregano
  • 1 tsp of salt
  • 1 tsp of chipotle chili powder


  • 2 tilapia fillets
  • 3 Tbs of melted butter
  • lemon wedges for serving


Start by stirring together the Creole mustard and the softened butter in a small bowl, set aside until serving.Then, mix all spice rub ingredients together in a small bowl, you won’t use all of this for this recipe, store the rest in an airtight container.Brush the fish with melted butter and rub on the spice mix, let rest for 15 minutes at room temperature before grilling.Prepare the outdoor grill. Oil the grate and grill the fish over direct heat about 2 minutes on each side, until blackened and beautiful! To serve, plate the Tilapia, serve with the mustard butter and a lemon wedge. Enjoy!
